THE Midlands Hotel in Gweru was temporarily cordoned off by police after a body of a 27-year-old Southview suburb man was found in a disused car in the hotel’s parking area.

The body of Denzel Trevor Dube, according to police sources, had stab wounds on the face and head.

It has been revealed that Dube  went missing on Friday after being severely assaulted by four suspected artisanal miners following a misunderstanding over an undisclosed matter.

His assailants, namely Washington Ngwenya (20) and Terrence Lewis Sibanda (18) both of Mkoba 14 suburb in Gweru, Nkosi Ncube (23) and Jealous Matola (22) both of Umsungwe Road, Ridgemont suburb in Gweru were subsequently arrested and appeared in court facing assault charges.

Police cordoned off Midlands Hotel as they were doing investigations

Police were looking for Dube until his body was discovered at Midlands Hotel yesterday morning.

Midlands Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the development.

“I can confirm that the hotel was condoned off after the body of a male adult was discovered in a disused vehicle. The body was in a state of decomposition in the hotel’s parking area. Investigations are currently underway,” he said.

When a Chronicle news crew visited Midlands Hotel in the morning, police had put barricade tapes to protect the integrity of the crime scene while evidence was being collected.

Also present was also Dube’s mother Ms Rebecca Dube, relatives and friends.

After they had finished and with Dube’s body removed from the scene, the barricade tapes were removed and it was business as usual at the hotel.

According to a police source, last Friday at around 8:30 PM, Dube and Ngwenya, Sibanda, Ncube and Matola were drinking beer at a bar in the city centre when they had an altercation over an unknown issue.

Sibanda allegedly started assaulting Dube with a sjambok.

It is said Ngwenya allegedly gave Sibanda an okapi knife which he used to stab Dube once below the right eye, once above the right eye and four times in the head.

Ngwenya allegedly hit Dube using an empty beer bottle on the head before he fled.

Two bar patrons witnessed the incident and made a report of assault at Gweru Central Police Station after realising that Dube was seriously injured.

Following the assault report, the four accused were arrested and appeared in court.

Ngwenya, Sibanda, Ncube and Matola were remanded in custody to today.

The body was conveyed to Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary for post mortem.
