Following a successful premiere at Bulawayo Theatre, the play 6th Avenue is set to captivate audiences in Harare at Theatre in the Park. Performances will run from tomorrow until Saturday, with shows scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 6:30pm.
Bulawayo’s iconic 6th Avenue comes alive on stage as Mphala Media presents a gripping production that explores the struggles and complex realities of life on the avenue.
Featuring a stellar cast, including Londile Mlotshwa, Chelesile Mpofu, and Nomvuyiso Mabi, 6th Avenue is written by Thulani Mbambo and Sipho Kamanga and directed by Scrah Mudala.
Kamanga highlighted the significance of taking the play to Harare, noting the longstanding collaboration between Amakhosi and Theatre in the Park.
“The writers and director are products of Amakhosi, and it has always been customary, even during Cont Mhlanga’s time, to premiere productions in Bulawayo before showcasing them in Harare. These two institutions have a rich history of collaboration as pioneers in the arts,” said Kamanga.
He added, “The story reflects our 6th Avenue while remaining relevant to the Gweru-Harare community. We believe audiences will resonate with it. Vendors have raised doctors, lawyers, accountants, and many other professionals through their hustling, and this play acknowledges that.”
Director Scrah Mudala elaborated on the plot, describing it as an intense drama that tackles themes of justice and morality.
“6th Avenue follows a street vendor on trial for homicide, exploring their struggle for survival amidst societal pressures. It challenges viewers to confront the meaning of justice in an unequal world,” said Mudala.
The play’s standout performances by Mlotshwa, Mpofu, and Mabi bring to life the characters’ personal and communal conflicts, inviting audiences to reflect on the broader implications of their choices.
“Through evocative storytelling and compelling performances, 6th Avenue promises to leave a lasting impact,” Mudala concluded.
