POLICE in Gokwe North, Midlands Province are investigating a case in which a 78-year-old woman was fatally axed by an unknown intruder.

The case occurred in Village Murozvi, Nembudziya on December 1 around 9 PM when Aleta Tsvangirayi was sleeping alone in her bedroom.

“The now deceased was at her homestead with her daughter-in-law Bvunzai Gandanga (47). They retired to bed in different huts. The daughter-in-law heard the woman quarrelling with another person as she asked how the person had entered the locked bedroom,” said Midlands Police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko.

The daughter-in-law rushed to call neighbours and they returned and found Tsvangirai lying unconscious after being struck with an axe. The intruder had already vanished and the gender of the intruder could not be ascertained.

Tsvangirayi died on the spot and her body was ferried to Gokwe North District Hospital for post-mortem.
