‘A well-tailored suit is to women what lingerie is to men’

Make of it what you will but if you ask me, a good suit gives a man that Je ne sais quoi. It gives him a desirable edge. Just like lingerie is appealing to men, a well-tailored suit has the same charm to women.

I was reminded of how important it is to wear clothes that fit earlier this week when I saw pictures of Ntando Van Moyo, the comedian, in a suit. Well, it would’ve been a good suit had the waistcoat been the right size is all I can say.

His potbelly could’ve been easily flattered by a better fitting waistcoat. In fact, he probably should’ve just dropped the waistcoat altogether.

It takes us back to the day Job Sikhala decided he was going in for the three-piece suit but ended up being the laughing stock for looking like he had borrowed the suit from the slender guy next door.

I know a lot of us don’t have perfect bodies, but that’s not the issue. The issue is not understanding your body type and knowing what works for it.

The right clothes do a great job of covering the bits we don’t want out there.

Essentially, whether you’re an office guy who needs to look sharp for the promotion, or a creative type who dresses up on the weekends for a date night, a suit is the basic building block of looking good.

Suits are timeless, ever adaptable and a style mainstay; they are always in style.

The menswear clothing business continues to expand into richer and more luxe colours outside of black, blues, and greys combined with patterns far beyond pinstripes.

Menswear has come into its own with a personality of great diversity. There really is a bit of everything for everyone, from the ultra-conservative to the more avant-garde man.

A suit is one of the biggest style investments a man can make. All you need is one good suit that you can wear in different ways when the need arises. You just have to make sure it’s the right size and cut for your body type.

If we’re to be completely honest, a significant number of men don’t pay the required attention to their looks.

Looking prim, proper, neat and pretty is a woman’s chore and they are more than happy to leave it at that. But girls would always prefer a man who has a certain visual appeal.

If you wear sandals from 1980 with denim, you are out of the league. Watches define a man. You need to pick your timepieces with a sharp eye.

Slim, organised wallets tell us that you are in control. There’s absolutely no need to stuff everything in there. Just the few cards you use on a regular and a couple of dollar bills will suffice.

Bad breath will never allow you to hit first base, even if you are a maestro with words. Brush your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day, floss, use mouth wash, take breath mints and visit the dentist twice a year.

We understand that you sweat but please don’t push it down our nostrils, body odour can be overwhelming. A study has proven that women fall in love with the fragrance a man carries. You may take help from Christian Dior Sauvage or Tom Ford Black Orchid, if you know what I mean.

Facial cleansing is about hygiene and doesn’t categorise you as metro sexual at all. Take care of your skin and drink water gentlemen.

Women like men in suits because they symbolise power, riches and class but if your manners stink then rest; don’t bother with the pointers above, they won’t help you.
