Rhumba albums, much like a book without a conclusion, feel incomplete without a chapter from Abafana BakaMlotshwa, who have remained consistent over the years. The band, hailing from Ntoli in Plumtree, has released its seventh album, Umbuso WeNgwenya.
Led by Andrew Mlotshwa, the group remains true to the traditional hard-hitting Rhumba genre of yesteryears. The album features eight tracks: Umthando Wabazali, Umbuso WeNgwenya, Ukwehla KwesiKhwehle, Jesu Wami, Kolobeja, Mama Wabantwana, Osginci Sikhala Eceleni, and Umelisa.
“We launched the album over the weekend in South Africa, and everything went well. We’re a growing band, and our fan base is expanding,” said Mlotshwa.
“The challenge these days is that we have so many bands, which divides the support we get from fans. One must work hard to win their hearts, and that’s what we’re doing.”
Listening to Umbuso WeNgwenya, it’s evident that Mlotshwa maintains the purity of his vocals and guitar work, avoiding the trend of overloading tracks with endless chants or name-dropping. His mastery as a rhythm guitarist shines through, complemented by Wellington Mjobhiza on lead guitar and Duncan Mvundla on bass. The album cements Abafana BakaMlothswa’s place in the Rhumba genre and offers a nostalgic yet refreshing listening experience for fans.
Mlotshwa revealed that their albums are gaining traction among businessmen, who purchase them at premium prices, far exceeding what typical fans might pay.
“This support is encouraging, as it helps us sustain the band and produce quality music,” he added.
The South Africa-based group has lined up several shows for the December festive season in Zimbabwe.
“I have a complete team in terms of the band, and we have several shows lined up. This is a great time for us to build our fan base. The good thing about playing at home is that there are no challenges like the violence we sometimes face this side. Families can come and enjoy our performances peacefully,” Mlotshwa said.
