All set for inaugural Sports Tourism Festival Malvern Kanjere

IT’S all systems go for the inaugural sports tourism festival set for the resort City of Victoria Falls this weekend.
The festival which will feature mountain biking, marathon, golf, tennis and aerobics, will run from September 24-26.
Its objective is to promote sports tourism, market brand Zimbabwe and create sustainable development for marginalised communities in tourism resort towns.

It is being organised by Sports Tourism Incorporation in collaboration with the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) and Zim Bho #Zim Yami, #vakatsha, Zimparks and the Sports and Recreation Commission.

“In terms of the festival, we are at an advanced stage of preparations, it’s like we are with a pregnancy that is due and come 25 September everything will be in place. We will have the big event, the marathon, on Sunday. We are so happy with where we are and what we have achieved.

This inaugural event is going to be exciting and we hope that people are going to enjoy Victoria Falls as well as enjoy the sport. We would like to thank all the partners that have helped us get here, we are so happy that our Government has also supported us through different ministries,” said Malvern Kanjere, public relations and marketing director of Ecotourism Africa and Sports Tourism Inc who is also the event co-ordinator.

Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) head of corporate affairs Godfrey Koti said the authority views the festival as a perfect opportunity to market destination Zimbabwe in general and Victoria Falls in particular through sports.

He said Sports Tourism was now a big product around the globe and there is a massive opportunity for collaboration with sport to further reach critical masses, and such initiatives will allow ZTA to position Zimbabwe as a must visit destination for both local and international tourists.

“We saw an opportunity to market the destination using sport. The festival will help us propel the domestic tourism drive that is underway, ZimBho campaign,” said Koti.
