THE impact of Western sanctions on Bulawayo, which is hosting the ZANU PF National People’s Conference, has been multifaceted and complex. Bulawayo, once Zimbabwe’s industrial hub, has witnessed a stark decline in recent years, largely attributed to a confluence of factors, including Western sanctions.

There are several examples of companies affected by sanctions in Bulawayo. These include F Issels and Sons, General Belting, and Radiator and Tinning. The factory shells of these engineering firms, now coated in rust, are stark reminders of Bulawayo’s industrial heyday.

Sadly, the once-bustling machinery lies dormant, a victim of neglect and economic hardship. Even the textile industry, represented by National Blankets Limited, has been significantly curtailed, with its operations reduced to a fraction of their former scale.

Also, Dunlop and the National Railways of Zimbabwe have been affected, as their ability to procure essential raw materials and spare parts from Europe has been severely restricted. This has led to disruptions in production, job losses, and a decline in overall economic activity.

The impact of the sanctions includes reduced trade, as the embargo has limited Bulawayo’s ability to trade with Western countries, impacting its economy and access to certain goods and services.

Sanctions have made it more difficult for Bulawayo businesses and individuals to access foreign currency, which is needed for imports and international transactions.

Furthermore, the sanctions have deterred foreign investors from investing in Bulawayo, hindering its economic growth and development.

Sanctions also have indirect effects. For example, the measures have led to increased costs for businesses and consumers in Bulawayo, as they have had to rely more on imports from non-sanctioned countries or find alternative sources of supply.

Furthermore, sanctions have limited Bulawayo’s access to certain technologies and equipment, hindering its industrial development and competitiveness.

Economic challenges caused by sanctions have contributed to increased unemployment rates in Bulawayo.

It should also be noted that despite challenges posed by Western sanctions, Bulawayo has shown resilience and adaptability.

The city has also benefited from the support of the Zimbabwean Government, which has provided assistance to mitigate the impact of sanctions.
