LOCAL celebrities have joined the fight against cholera by penning songs and embarking on awareness campaigns.

The cholera outbreak in Harare has claimed over 35 lives to date.

Bulawayo reggae musician Gift Savanhu, better known as Gee Mpostory, said he wants to fight cholera through music. The 31-year-old singer has teamed up with fellow artists from the city, Harare and Jamaican artist Dwayno to come up with a 12-track album titled Kicking out Cholera through Music.

Other than the album, he said he would carry out a clean-up campaign in Bulawayo on October 5 that will culminate in a concert at Northend Envy Bar and Grill later that day.

This is when the album will be launched. Fast-rising Zimdancehall musician Nutty O, Master H and Moosafa King are billed to perform.

Gee Mpostory said proceeds from the concert will go towards the fight against cholera and will be used to buy food, blankets and provide clean water and clothes for street kids.

Andrew Musona, Gee Mpostory’s manager said they were appealing to corporates who would like to partner them to come through. So far, they have partnered with Legal Guardian, FSG Funeral Services and Enviromental Stars Trust Africa in this cause.

Meanwhile, legendary musician Oliver Mtukudzi took to social media this week to urge fellow Zimbabweans to take safety measures against the prevailing cholera outbreak.

He advised people to wash their hands with soap or ashes and to eat their food while it is still hot to try and fight the infectious disease.

Celebrity couple Tytan and Olinda also joined forces with Harare’s Glen View South MP Vimbai Tsvangirai-Java in an awareness campaign against the outbreak.

Commented Tytan: “We’ve been providing aid in any way possible including providing clean water to affected communities and providing diapers for babies.
We’re also doing crowd funding and as of now, we’ve managed to get 30 000 litres of clean water and 9 000 diapers.”

Edith WeUtonga has recorded a track to try and raise awareness about cholera and appeal to government to assist.

“My brother Audinence Kuimba and I got into the studio to record a song that appeals to the government for better health delivery systems. The cholera outbreak really pushed us to record this track titled Kasiwanamai.”
