Battle of church choirs: Abundant Life Church Choir

SINCE its establishment in 2008, the Abundant Life International Ministries (ALIM) Revival Choir has been a cornerstone of the ministry’s expression of faith. The choir’s journey, witnessed by Bulawayo communities, is a testament to its enduring growth and impact.

Its founding members, led by Prophet Itayi Ukama, the founder and overseer of the Abundant Life International Ministries church, contributed significantly to its development. With the ministry’s expansion to Josiah Tongogara and 6th Avenue, leadership fell to new leaders, who, along with over 50 choir members, cultivated a vibrant musical presence from 2012 to 2013. This era was marked by dedication, as members gathered at dawn for intercession prayers and pursued instrumental training, enhancing their Sunday Service offerings.

The current members of the choir are Minister Robson J, Nicole Sipholi, Precious Makuvaza, Prosper Dube, Tungamirai Kanai, Lorraine Muchanyerei, Uneiloe Sipholi, Nokukhanya Bhengu, Primrose Ndlovu, Daisy Moyo, Privilege Ncube, Patience Mhangwa, Patience Dube, Stacy Bibi, Ryan Chawanda, Royal, Chawanda, Jeffrey Kuvarega, Tapiwa Mashonjowa, Privilege Muleya, and Gladys Mdlaziba.

“The choir’s journey, witnessed by Bulawayo communities, is a testament to its enduring growth and impact,” says Robson Sipholi.

The Abundant Life Church Choir transcends the traditional role of a singing ensemble; it embodies a community of believers united in conveying their faith and love through the power of music. Their commitment is evident in their rigorous rehearsal schedule, which includes Saturday afternoons and sometimes extends through the night, all in preparation for significant events like Worship Night and Concerts.

Their repertoire spans various musical styles, from hymns to contemporary pieces, performed in an array of languages including Ndebele, Venda, Shona, and English, always upholding a standard of decency. The choir’s participation in events like the Worship Night and Concerts has not only been memorable but has also served to glorify God. They eagerly anticipate future endeavours such as the Easter Conference, the 7 Days of Power, Solution Sunday, and album releases from Min Prosper, Min Sipholi, and the Revival Choir. Additionally, they look forward to enriching their musical skills at a workshop and worship seminar at Thuli Christian Camp.

“The choir’s participation in events like the Worship Night and Concerts has not only been memorable but has also served to glorify God,” Sipholi proudly states.

The choir’s influence extends beyond performance; they foster spiritual and cultural enrichment within the church through weekly Bible verse study and worship sessions during rehearsals, which strengthen their communal and spiritual bonds. Their philosophy is to sing for divine purpose rather than mere performance, ensuring each song is internalised and delivered with heartfelt sincerity.

Despite facing challenges like insufficient microphones, sound system limitations, online transmission quality, fluctuating membership, and personal obstacles, the choir perseveres.

“We find strength in mutual support, prayer, and the guidance of Prophet Ukama, who provides essential resources,’ Sipholi notes.

The choir extends a warm invitation to those interested in joining or supporting their mission. Opportunities abound for new members and volunteers, and contributions towards uniforms, microphones, band equipment, and constructive feedback are greatly valued. Their ultimate goal is to touch lives spiritually and contribute to the effective soul-winning mission of the church.

The Abundant Life Church Choir stands out as a passionate, diverse, and exemplary group, harmonising the rhythm of life with the melody of faith.
