Berita beats African music giants Berita

ZIMBABWEAN soulful singer Berita Khumalo won a South African Music Award(Samas) in the Rest of Africa category on Saturday night.

In winning this award, the Bulawayo born artiste beat the likes of Davido, Wizkid, fellow Zimbabwean Buffalo Souljah and Sauti Sol.

The independent artiste who released her album, Song in the Key of Love last year under her record label, Assali Music, was among the winners during the 27th Samas. It was a belated anniversary gift for Berita and her husband Nhlamulo Baloyi, who is the executive producer of the album. The couple celebrated a year of being together, after tying the knot through a traditional wedding on July 26, last year.

After winning the award, Berita, gave thanks to God and her team, which includes her husband. “Look at God. A dream 9 years in the making!!! So much dedication and passion went into this project I am grateful for this moment, I honour my album Songs in the key of Love and the key team involved,” said Berita on her social media pages.

Meanwhile, Amapiano star Kabza De Small scooped four awards at the Samas. In the pre-recorded awards that were flighted on SABC 1, Kabza De Small became the biggest winner of the night, followed by DJ Maphorisa with three awards. The artiste’s collaboration with DJ Maphorisa as Scorpion Kings earned them Album of the Year, Duo or Group of the Year and Best Amapiano Album. Kabza’s solo effort, I Am The King of Amapiano: Sweet & Dust won him Male Artist of the Year gong.

The internationally acclaimed Master KG took home the Samro Composer Highest Airplay award that he shares with Nomcebo Zikode. He further won International Achiever Award for his monster hit Jerusalema featuring Nomcebo. Gospel star Bucy Radebe bagged two trophies, the White Star Newcomer of the Year and Best Traditional Faith Album for Spiritual Encounter. Sho Madjozi scooped the Best Traditional Album and Sofnfree Female Artist of the Year.

Blaq Diamond was crowned Artist of the Year. Cape Town artist Matthew Mole walked away with the Record of the Year. -Sowetan/Online Reporter
