BULAWAYO rugby is taking a break this weekend after hosting a 10-a-side tournament for local clubs last weekend as they prepare to host a team from Gweru next weekend at the city’s ceremonial home of rugby, Hartsfield Rugby Grounds.

After the completion of the local league, the Bulawayo rugby board decided to host a 10-a-side tournament as a way of keeping their players fit. This weekend, however, they will not have any games as they are planning to host the Gweru Sports Club team.

Bulawayo Select and Warriors head coach, Ruben Kumpasa told Chronicle Sports that they are planning something big for next weekend.

“We are taking a break this weekend as we are planning something big for next week, with Gweru Select side coming over,” Kumpasa said.

The tournament will however, not be Gweru Select playing Bulawayo Select but they will be playing against various clubs from the city. The teams include Old Miltonians, Bulldogs, Highlanders and Warriors.

The tournament is however, open to any club willing to participate or a single team club having more than one team as they aim to spread the game of rugby to everyone and make it more popular.

The games will also be a way of keeping players fit and ready for the Sevens Summer Series in October.

A Bulawayo Select team has been playing in the Super Six rugby tournament where they have played three games, losing their first two against foes Old Hararians at Hartsfield and Manicaland Select in Mutare. In their third game, the team traveled to the capital to face Harare Select where they won.
