A 26-YEAR-OLD bus driver who was involved in an accident which killed one person, has been sentenced to two months in jail and banned from driving for two years.  Japhet Mvundura of Old Highfields Harare had pleaded not guilty to culpable homicide when he appeared before Gweru magistrate, Ms Rutendo Muchena.
Ms Muchena, however, found Mvundura guilty and sentenced him to an effective two months in prison.
He was also banned from driving for two years and had his licence cancelled as part of the sentence.

For the State, Mr Bernard Nyoni told the court that on 21 April 2011 and at about 3 am, Mvundura was driving a scania bus registration numbers 583-968X with 68 passengers on board.

The court heard that on approaching the 13 km peg along the Shurugwi-Mhandamambwe Highway, Mvundura who was driving towards Shurugwi overtook a heavy truck which was carrying seven vehicles destined for Zambia.

Mr Nyoni said Mvundura who was overtaking at a curve, then tried to manoeuvre after realising that there was an on coming truck resulting in the bus side swiping the haulage truck.

The bus then veered off the road  and overturned killing one passenger on the spot.
Eleven others were injured in the accident and were taken to Shurugwi District Hospital.
