Business lessons from children

Morris Mpala, MoB Capital Ltd
CHILDREN are just wonderful beings and a marvel always. Their traits carry the day, and emulating them could be a passport to a successful life in general. They fall and get up quickly and keep on trying.

They never give up. In between tears, bruises and inadequacies, they always try until they get it right or know they can’t get it right ever.

Try new things
Adventure is the heartbeat of a child and the beginner’s mindset. Similarly, in everything you do start pure and exhibit eagerness to learn. Learn to laugh a lot like a child. This is the best medicine in the world. Do it freely and heartily, it relaxes the much over worked body and rejuvenates tired muscles and soul.

Make new friends, be creative
It is advisable to be approachable and be able to approach new beginnings. Be creative too. Remember, survival is about creativity in whatever you embark on. Creativity is the art of longevity and keeps things fresh, relevant and that is sustainability in most ventures undertaken. Add fun as well. Enjoy what you do because only then can the output be great. Taking a break to having literal fun is advised without a care of what the world is going through.

Ask more questions, share things
An inquisitive mind is fertile ground for learning and growth. Through understanding can you be knowledgeable otherwise blissful ignorance is a recipe for disaster. Do not be shy to ask what you don’t comprehend. To share is to care. Be generous with food, information and financial resources. It builds character as well and thus being accommodative to the vulnerable community members.

Take short naps, be open minded
Taking breaks is key to keeping you focused and prepared for tomorrow. Recharging your batteries on regular intervals is very strategic in the grand scheme of things. Be open minded and all welcoming to new ideas, new challenges and ways of survival in this ever evolving world. The mind is the biggest asset we have but when it becomes stoic we are in serious trouble of extinction.

Love learning, have energy
A person perishes because of lack of knowledge. You can’t afford to acquire knowledge while you sit on your laurels, especially in this information age and information is the currency. Besides, all things being said and all things being equal your zeal determines your latitude. The bumble of energy you are gives rise to opportunities, sustains your aspirations and thus increases visibility, which translates into longevity in the chosen field of unparalleled passion.

Forgiving
Learn to forgive others, above all to forgive yourself too. Keeping grudges only hurts you. It’s so healthy to forgive and there is so much power in forgiving others.

Be arrogantly confident, fearless
Confidence breeds class and stamina in the jungles that we live in. Opened doors are for the confident.

Winning is associated with confidence and once you master the art of confidence you will be unstoppable. Fear not. Go in as if you will not fail. No guts no glory. This world is not for the faint hearted but the brave, bold and smart aggression. To conquer you have to be fearless. A coward dies so many times before they eventually die.

They know the mother’s rod
Children know how to toe the line to avoid the mother’s rod. That fear brings checks and balances in one’s life. If they find out what they like and it occupies their minds they will do that activity day and night without a care in the world. The passion is unprecedented and it will be repeated until the kingdom comes.

It’s nice to be child-like and enjoy the joys of being child like. It is these lessons that we derive from children that we can also practise in our day to day routines, be they social or otherwise so that we can stand out and maximise our potential.
