IT was supposed to be a comedy roast of rapper Cal Vin but the hip hop musician turned the tables on comedians on Friday night as he outsmarted them during the show.

The comedy roast was held at the Thistle Room at Bulawayo Centre in front of a packed house.

A comedy roast is a form of humour in which a specific individual, a guest of honour, is subjected to jokes at their expense intended to amuse the event’s wider audience. Cal Vin was the guest.

Apart from novices on the panel such as Nyasha “Diva” Mtamangira, journalist Sindiso Dube and Cal Vin’s friend named Mr Lit, Cal Vin ended up surprising all and sundry.

The show organised by Umahlekisa Comedy Club started off with Nomsa D who spoke about Cal Vin’s struggles as a father of two with two different women.

This was not before she took aim at her fellow comics Sikhanyiso that Guy whose appearance she said looked like a vagabond and he had unbearable body odour and also to Mandla Da Comedian and Roast Master Ntando Van Moyo.

All in all the comics were funny but they were not as brutal as Cal Vin was on stage.

At the end, all comics were surprised at how Cal Vin ended up stealing the show.

“We weren’t ready for Cal Vin. We decided to go easy on him but he decided to go all in during the roast. It was good fun though and we enjoyed the night,” said Ntando Van Moyo.

Cal Vin said the comedians underestimated him probably because they did not know that he had been in such situations before.

“I hadn’t written anything down to roast the panel. I imagined that as a rap battle and I did just that, I free styled. I think they underestimated me but it was good fun,” said Cal Vin.

Meanwhile, award winning Ma Forty 40s Press conference was a cocktail of laughs and spills on Saturday night at the Bulawayo Theatre.

After his set there was a mini comedy roast where the panel comprised Ntando Van Moyo and Sikhanyiso that Guy poked fun at his cross eye.
