Two large modern tents stood proudly at Glamis Arena grounds in Harare, housing 11 eager music groups all vying to become the next Chibuku Road to Fame champions.
Each group, eyeing the others with a mix of admiration and ambition, was focused on outshining their competitors and claiming a spot in Zimbabwe’s music scene.
Zimbabwe’s ten provinces, each brimming with rich cultural influences, came together on Saturday in a showcase of song and dance, revealing the country’s unity through diversity. This year marked a historic first as 11 groups participated, all bringing a unique element to the Chibuku Road to Fame 2024 edition.
The finale was electrifying, with hundreds of fans gathering to witness the rise of fresh musical talent. Kweseka Band from Matabeleland North emerged victorious, delivering a standout performance that captivated both the judges and audience alike. When the announcement came, the band’s triumphant cheers filled the grounds, met with enthusiastic applause from the crowd. Overcome with joy, Kweseka Band members embraced one another, relishing their achievements. The audience’s energy was palpable, celebrating with the winners as they shared in the emotional victory, smiles, and a performance that would linger long after the event.
Although they did not win the competition, the Bulawayo Metropolitan group, Music 2 Music brought a unique twist to the Afro-traditional genre they represent. Their sound artfully blended ancient musical elements with modern rhythms, giving the audience a refreshing take on Zimbabwe’s cultural heritage.
The Fugees from Beitbridge, Matabeleland South is definitely a group that people need to look out for as they captivated audiences with their sungura skills, becoming instant crowd favourites. As the only sungura group in the competition, they had the Glamis Arena audience dancing to their infectious beat.
While the curtains may have closed on this year’s edition, the excitement continues to build for 2025, promising an even larger and more dynamic showcase.
Aspiring artists are being encouraged to polish their skills for next year’s Chibuku Road to Fame, where another crop of emerging talent will take to the stage.
