The late Chief Mabhikwa of Lupane lost a lot of blood after being involved in a head-on collision with a haulage truck on Sunday night leading to his death, his family has said, citing post-mortem results.

Chief Mabhikwa (28) died early Monday morning at St Luke’s Hospital where he had been rushed for treatment after his car, an Isuzu twin cab, was involved in a head-on collision with a haulage truck, just 6kM from his homestead in Jotsholo.

Born Vusumuzi Khumalo from Jotsholo area in Lupane, he was installed Chief Mabhikwa on May 11, 2012 at the age of 18, and had served the traditional leadership institution for a decade.

Chief Mabhikwa’s body was taken to Bulawayo on Monday afternoon for a post-mortem at Mpilo Central Hospital on the same day.

Family spokesperson Mr Donald Khumalo said the results of the post-mortem revealed that Chief Mabhikwa lost a lot of blood.

“The results of the post-mortem are out and they indicated that Chief Mabhikwa suffered severe haemorrhaging, due to the accident and this caused his untimely death.

The results came out on the day that his body was taken to hospital,” said Mr Khumalo.

He said burial arrangements are going on as planned with Chief Mabhikwa’s body expected to leave Bulawayo for his rural home in Jotsholo this afternoon, for burial tomorrow.

Chief Mabhikwa was born on September 24, 1993 and attended Jotsholo Primary and Fatima High schools.

At the age of 19 he attended the Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology and also attained a Diploma in Information and Communication Technology at Boston City College South Africa in 2012.

He is survived by a son.

In 2019, President Mnangagwa appointed Chief Mabhikwa as part of the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe board, after he was seconded by the Chiefs Council.
