A 35-YEAR-OLD man from Chipinge, Manicaland Province will spend two years in prison for having a sexual relationship with an underage girl from his village.
The law sets the age of consent at 18, which means that only individuals above this age can legally engage in consensual sexual activities.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) in a statement on X, said “Sometime in February 2024, the accused met the complainant (13) at the local shops, proposed love to her and she agreed. On the 25th of June 2024, the complainant’s uncle went away and left the complainant at home.
“The accused person took the complainant to his house where they had sexual intercourse twice overnight. The complainant’s cousin discovered that she did not sleep at home and upon enquiry, the complainant revealed that she slept at the accused person’s house and that they had sexual intercourse. A police report was made, leading to the arrest of the accused person.”
The accused was sentenced to 3 years in prison, but will only serve 2 years, said the NPAZ.
