COMMENT: Highlanders does not need malcontents and rabble-rousers at their clubhouse
A SHADOWY group of self-serving individuals pursuing their own personal agendas has seemingly hijacked Highlanders Football Club.
Its recent move to call for a fans’ boycott of Sunday’s league match between Highlanders and Greenfuel at Barbourfields Stadium should raise eyebrows among those who are deeply concerned about the future of the club’s fan base.
It is disturbing that this group is trying to use its influence in social circles to enforce its own agenda on fans who support Highlanders. This group’s motives must be questioned, as it is apparent that it’s not acting in the best interests of Bosso or its fans.
Even more worrying is that this cabal even tried to force people to pay for entrance to the clubhouse on Sunday, including those who had chosen to ignore its boycott calls and attended the match at the stadium. This is an extortionate and shameful behaviour that clearly shows the true nature of this group.
As things stand, it’s important to ask whether the Highlanders executive sanctioned or was behind Sunday’s so-called boycott-cum-fundraiser. If not, the question arises as to why the executive has remained quiet when a group of rabble-rousers have been bringing the club into disrepute with their disruptive behaviour.
Where and what is the source of this group’s shameful behaviour? This is a question that needs answers, as the club should never be associated with such negative and chaotic practices.
The most concerning aspect of this situation is that partial elections for the Highlanders executive are coming up in January next year, with members set to choose a new vice-chairman and treasurer. It is obvious that all this is about trying to influence the outcome of that vote by creating chaos and disunity among the club’s fans and membership.
It is essential to remind all Highlanders supporters that no individual is more Bosso than others, and no one is bigger than the club. The club belongs to all of its members, and no one has the right to hijack it for their personal gain.
In times like this, Bosso need strong, principled leaders who can unite its fans and steer it towards success and not fearmongers who always see ghosts everywhere. Those who want to contest for office should do so by proffering concrete ideas and contesting openly instead of resorting to scorched-earth tactics that are only meant to bring the club down.
Highlanders need to regain their standing as the oldest and most respected football club in the country. For this to happen, malcontents, who constitute a notorious minority in this case, shouldn’t be allowed to destroy the good standing of the club through their careless talk and actions. Genuine Bosso supporters must now stand up to defend the club and put an end to this perpetual madness.
Highlanders last won the league championship in 2006 because there are too many fingers in the Bosso cake. It is time to take a stand and ensure that this great institution is run by individuals who have the best interests of the club and supporters and can account for their actions.
