COMMENT: More needs to be done to tackle rise in fatal road accidents Road-accident

IT is a sad reality that the number of fatal road accidents is increasing in our country.

Despite repeated warnings by the Government against unsafe driving practices, reckless behaviour by kombi and bus drivers continues to be a major cause of concern.

Recent accidents involving speeding and overtaking at dangerous spots are clear examples of the reckless and careless behaviour that is prevalent on our roads.

Five lives were needlessly lost and six people were injured in Kuwadzana, Harare, yesterday when a commuter kombi driver turned in front of an oncoming fuel tanker.

Two people died and 43 were injured when a bus travelling from Mutare to Bulawayo overturned at the Umguza River bridge behind Nust last Sunday.

There are numerous accidents involving privately owned vehicles as well as hit-and-runs.

The impact of these accidents cannot be understated.

The loss of life and limb is devastating for families and communities. For those who survive, the emotional and physical impact can be felt for years to come.

Moreover, the country’s economy also takes a hit, as it must bear the cost of these accidents.

The Government must take action to curb this growing ugly trend.

It is not enough to simply issue warnings to public transport operators and drivers. More needs to be done to enforce regulations and impose penalties on those who flout the rules.

Drivers must adhere to speed limits, traffic signals and other rules. The authorities should consider harsher penalties for drivers who engage in reckless behaviour, such as reckless driving, overtaking on a solid line, speeding, and bullying other drivers.

When drivers know that traffic rules are enforced strictly, they tend to drive more responsibly and cautiously. This helps to promote responsible driving habits and reduces the likelihood of accidents. The Government must take stern action now to prevent further loss of life on our roads.

It is also important to address the issue of driver training.

Many drivers on our roads lack proper training and experience.

It is essential that the Government prioritises training initiatives to ensure that drivers are aware of their responsibilities and understand the dangers of reckless driving. Additionally, there should be regular training to ensure continuous improvement in driving skills.

The increase in road accidents in general is unacceptable and requires immediate action, and the current situation must not be allowed to continue.

More focus should be put on improving infrastructure and driver training. It is the responsibility of every one of us to campaign for safer roads.

We must all play our part in ensuring that our roads are safe for everyone. It is our collective responsibility to prevent the loss of life on our roads.
