A POLICE officer was yesterday hauled to court for allegedly driving using a fake licence. Mkhokheli Nyoni, stationed at Inyathi Police Station in Matabeleland North province, allegedly produced a counterfeit driver’s licence after he lost control of his vehicle and rammed into a tree. He appeared before Bulawayo provincial magistrate Sibongile Msipa-Marondedze facing two counts of fraud. Nyoni pleaded not guilty and was remanded out of custody to April 10.

He said he did not forge the driver’s licence.

The State’s case represented by Nkathazo Dlodlo is that on February 1, Nyoni was driving an Opel Record at Inyathi Police Camp.

“He lost control of the vehicle and it veered off the drive way and crashed into a tree,” said Dlodlo.

It was not stated to the court whether Nyoni sustained injuries after the crash.

Traffic police officers from Mbembesi attended the scene of the accident and asked Nyoni to produce his driver’s licence within seven days.

The court heard that on February 9, Nyoni went to the traffic department at Mbembesi Police Station and produced a fake driver’s licence. Dlodlo said records at the Vehicle Inspection Depot in Bulawayo revealed that the serial numbers on the driver’s licence Nyoni delivered had already been issued to one Madei Sibanda.
