DOREEN Dube, a Bulawayo-based businesswoman, has defied the odds to build a thriving construction company. The loss of her husband, Joseph Matata, a co-founder of Mobeat Sliding Gates Private Limited, was a devastating blow, but it did not deter her from carrying on their legacy.
Established in 2007, Mobeat Sliding Gates Pvt, also known as Alert Engineering, offers a range of construction services including metal fabrication, plumbing, painting, and thermal insulation. The company has a strong presence in both industrial and residential projects. Doreen’s business partner, a seasoned industry expert, plays a crucial role in marketing their services.
Before embarking on her entrepreneurial journey, Doreen completed her education at Intunta Primary School and Ihlathi High School in Bulawayo. She later acquired a marketing certificate from Species College.
In an interview with the Saturday Chronicle, Doreen opened up about the challenges she faced after her husband’s untimely passing. She described their marriage as a “happy partnership” focused on building a family. Entering the male-dominated world of business was not without its difficulties, but Doreen persevered.
Balancing motherhood with her demanding career has been a constant juggling act for the mother of five. Despite the early hours and long days, she remains committed to providing for her family. She admits to leaving home before her children wake up but makes time for domestic duties, including preparing meals and ensuring they are ready for school.
Doreen’s journey has been one of resilience and determination. She believes that the challenges she has faced have empowered her, shaping her path as an entrepreneur.
“My mission has been to inspire and elevate those around me, even when their expertise surpasses my own. My strength lies in those who challenge me. Surrounding myself with brilliance, I have watched my vision expand beyond limits,” she said.
Having faced judgement, criticism, and disrespect in her journey, she embraced it all, providing exceptional work to satisfy her clients. She said it hasn’t been easy navigating through a male-dominated industry, but she has positioned herself to do business. Having faced biases and scepticism in her journey in the competitive industry, Dube doesn’t allow bullies to overstep and trample her as she quickly places them where they belong.
Dube says she will always remember her husband as her source of inspiration and mentor. Taking on what is considered to be a male-dominated industry has boosted her confidence as she gets bolder and stronger with each passing day. Dube hopes to empower females in her industry by having female artisans under her belt.
“I see myself as a Proverbs 31 lady who derives her strength from God. I was never going to make it without God,” she said.
