EDITORIAL COMMENT:Growing the economy is every Zimbabwean’s duty Mr Chamisa

It is now three months since the July 30 harmonised elections which were won by President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his ruling Zanu-PF party.

Cde Mnangagwa’s close rival was Mr Nelson Chamisa of the MDC Alliance who challenged the poll results at the Constitutional Court and lost.

It seems Mr Chamisa is still to come to terms with the defeat after raising false hope among his supporters that he was winning the elections.

Mr Chamisa this week convened a Press conference at Harvest House where he pleaded for a coalition Government with President Mnangagwa.

“In fact, we will ultimately discuss and resolve our national issues as a country, but there has been no appetite from Mr Mnangagwa to discuss. He seems to want to discuss with the international community not realising that the local community is more important to discuss with, as much as international community is also important,” said Mr Chamisa.

President Mnangagwa on Thursday said Zanu-PF had no plans for a Government of National Unity with the opposition and is instead focused on implementing policies beneficial to Zimbabweans.

Cde Mnangagwa dismissed as dreamers those thinking of a GNU saying Zanu-PF had no time for such people.

“May I warn you not to take heed of utterances from various opposition quarters. Let us focus our energies towards growing the economy,” Cde Mnangagwa told members of his party’s central committee.

We have said it before that Zimbabweans should put the elections behind them and focus on turning around the economy.

Every Zimbabwean should now put shoulder to the wheel in order to grow the economy which has suffered many years of stagnation.

It is unfortunate that we have among us politicians such as Mr Chamisa who are still in the election mode, months after the elections.

The issue of growing the economy is a responsibility of every Zimbabwean regardless of one’s political affiliation.

Zimbabweans belong to different political parties but when it comes to issues of national agenda such as growing the economy, there is a need for convergence.

The developments witnessed during the past three weeks confirmed that the nation is not pulling in the same direction.

We have individuals going against the grain and therefore putting spanners in the works.

Businesses unjustifiably increased prices in some cases by as much as 50 percent and others are demanding payment in US Dollar or rand.

These are economic saboteurs that Government should whip into line before it is too late.

These are businesses or individuals that relish people’s suffering and should therefore be exposed and punished severely.

It is difficult to rule out a political agenda given the economic destabilisation these businesses and individuals caused in just three weeks.
