FC Platinum’s season of missed opportunities

FC PLATINUM coach, Norman Mapeza, has cited his team’s inability to convert chances into goals as their major downfall in the just-ended season. Despite scoring the second most number of goals (44) in the league, FC Platinum finished as runners-up to champions Simba Bhora, who amassed 66 points to Platinum’s 61.

Ngezi Platinum Stars (57) and Manica Diamonds 54 make up the top four.
Ngezi Platinum scored the most goals in the season as they found the back of the net 46 times.

Mapeza is of the view his forward line let them down this season.

“We created so many chances in our last game against TelOne, but we couldn’t convert them. This has been our story throughout the season, creating chances and failing to convert them. We need to rectify this problem and come out stronger next season,” Mapeza said.

Mapeza revealed that the team will be looking to bolster their strike force ahead of the new season.

“We’ll be looking around, but we can’t publicly mention the players we’re interested in. We have our targets, and when the time is right, we’ll approach them,” he said.

At the start of the season, FC Platinum began their renewal process by releasing several ageing players, including captain Petros Mhari, Innocent Mucheneka and Walter Musona. They then bolstered their ranks with the arrival of eight new players.

The signings included, former Highlanders duo of Mbongeni Ndlovu and Brighton Manhire, Davison Marowa from Herentals, Shepherd Mhlanga from Chicken Inn, Northern Region Division One player Bothwell Nzori and goalkeeper, David Bizabani.

The team also promoted Anesu Chirinda and Tapiwa Revesai from their developmental ranks.
There was high expectation in terms of what the team would do this past season but they were not consistent this just ended season.

FC Platinum have four league championships under their belt.
The club has enjoyed significant success in recent years, winning the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League title four times (2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021-22). They won the Chibuku Super Cup in the 2020/21 season. — @innocentskizoe
