Harare-based Zimdancehall star Freeman, popularly known as HKD Boss, is determined to take his music to new heights in 2025.

In an interview with Chronicle Showbiz during his visit to Bulawayo last week, Freeman, who is riding high with his hit track Chahwiriri, shared his ambitious plans for the year, highlighting his goal to push creative boundaries.

“My motive for this year is to take my music to the next level. I want to experiment with different genres and create music that inspires and uplifts those who listen to it,” Freeman said.

He also expressed his eagerness to collaborate with artistes across different genres, citing his past work with Sungura legend Alick Macheso on Ngaibake as an example.

“I relate well to musicians from other genres. I’m open to working with artistes both within and outside Zimdancehall. Collaborations like the one I did with Macheso (Baba Shero) help me grow as an artiste,” he said.

His first major release of the year — a collaboration with rising artistes Delroy Shewe and Chillmaster — has already generated excitement, with fans sharing sing-along videos of the new track Mpaka across social media.

The song, accompanied by a music video, was released last week and has been met with positive reviews.

“I’m feeling blessed and optimistic about the year ahead. I released my album Me versus Me late last year, and now I’ve kicked off 2025 with a fresh collaboration. The response has been amazing,” he said.

Born Emegy Sylvester Chizanga, Freeman has been a dominant force in the Zimdancehall scene, earning a dedicated fan base both locally and internationally.

Reflecting on his journey, he expressed pride in the growth of his brand, HKD, and extended gratitude to his loyal fans, affectionately known as MaGalis, for their unwavering support.

Addressing speculation about rivalry with fellow Zimdancehall heavyweight Winky D, Freeman was quick to set the record straight.

“I’m my own competition. I don’t compete with anyone — it’s always ‘Me versus Me’ in my life and musically,” he said.

“I respect Winky D; he’s a great artiste, but I don’t see us as competitors.”

Instead of engaging in rivalries, Freeman said his focus is on self-improvement and delivering quality music to his audience.

Looking ahead, the musician plans to be more strategic in his career by performing at more shows and expanding his brand.
