PRESIDENTIAL Affairs and Devolution Permanent Secretary, Engineer Tafadzwa Muguti, has commended Bulawayo Metropolitan Province for effectively leading the anti-smuggling campaign.
He was speaking in the city on Thursday where met various stakeholders and conducted a tour of some manufacturing companies.
“I am happy that the anti-smuggling campaign in Bulawayo was the most successful in the country. It did way better than the capital itself. And we are seeing that more of the formal businesses are getting the right support from government,” said Eng Muguti.
“Various top of the range vehicles and an assortment of smuggled goods are impounded at the Container Depot Bulawayo (CONDEP) in Bulawayo.”
The vast warehouse is packed with an assortment of goods ranging from stoves, refrigerators, diapers, alcoholic beverages, tinned foods and other goods.
Goods can be held for 60 to 90 days under the Customs and Excise Act. Various disposal methods, including rummage sales and destruction, are used to clear warehouses.
Eng Muguti was in the Matabeleland region touring high impact projects that include Portland Cement (PPC) at Cement side in Bulawayo, Carousel Manufacturing, Treger Products and Blanket Mine in Gwanda.
