Investigation underway as sewer contaminates drinking water in Cowdray Park

RESIDENTS of Cowdray Park have raised concerns over contaminated and foul-smelling drinking water after tests confirmed the presence of faecal coliforms in household samples. The contamination, linked to sewer infiltration, was reported at a residence identified as 14531 Cowdray Park.
According to the latest Bulawayo City Council report detailing the investigation, six water samples were collected: three for bacteriological analysis and three for chemical analysis. Two of the samples were submitted directly by the complainant, while the others were collected as part of routine sampling.
The findings revealed that water from the routine sampling point was compliant with health standards. However, the samples collected from the complainant’s household were non-compliant, testing positive for faecal coliforms, suggesting a localised issue.
A sanitary inspection of the area pointed to a dead-end supply zone as the potential cause. Officials indicated that the problem likely arose during the restoration of water supplies following scheduled shedding.
The analysis showed alarming results from household taps, with one sample recording “too numerous to count” (TNTC) plate counts. This underscores the severity of contamination in certain areas of Cowdray Park.
The data revealed the following:
• Cowdray Park Housing Office (Routine Sampling Point): Compliant, with no faecal coliforms detected.
• 14531 Cowdray Park Tap (Complainant): Positive for faecal coliforms.
• 14531 Cowdray Park (Submitted by Complainant): Positive for faecal coliforms and TNTC plate counts.
• 14528 Cowdray Park: Positive for faecal coliforms and TNTC plate counts.
The findings have been shared with the Water and Sanitation Department for immediate corrective action. Residents have called for urgent interventions to address the contamination and prevent future occurrences.
Authorities have assured the community that measures will be taken to resolve the issue, highlighting broader concerns about the water infrastructure in the suburb. Residents are advised to boil their drinking water while awaiting a permanent solution.
This latest incident adds to ongoing challenges faced by residents of Cowdray Park, underscoring the critical need for improved water and sanitation management.
