Over the weekend, the Zimbabwe Music Academy in Bulawayo was alive with captivating sounds of JoyRukanza (born Roselyn Joy Rukanzakanza), an orchestral artiste born in Bulawayo but now making waves in the United States.
The event, aptly titled Pop Meets Classical, showcased an impressive blend of a grand piano, percussion, vocals, trombone and violin, creating an enchanting atmosphere that left attendees spellbound.
Despite an unwelcome delay in starting the show, the overall experience was worth the time.
The sound was well-balanced and the stage was meticulously set, establishing a tone of unfamiliar fun that resonated throughout the evening.
Fresh from lending her vocals to Da_Kudu and KBrizzy’s song Energy, local RnB songstress Kyla Blac sang like an angel, curtain-raising for JoyRukanza with her song Somebody.
Draped in a stunning pink dress, JoyRukanza — who is usually seen sporting vibrant green hair — graced the stage with her sleek black locks, ready to mesmerise her audience.
Central to the evening’s performance was JoyRukanza’s debut album, MatterMoreForSis.
With songs such as Go, House, Queendom, Qu-weshe, New Day and Somebody, JoyRukanza preached love.
The album is a profound exploration of a woman’s journey through unrequited love, drawing a double-barrelled reference to metamorphosis.
Through its eleven dynamic tracks, the album narrates a love story that traverses the stages of grief — anger, depression and ultimately acceptance.
With an all-female host of angelic chorale voices borrowed from Vocal Ex, JoyRukanza took the audience on an emotional journey alongside the protagonist, who initially struggles with heartbreak but gradually learns to embrace her situation, discovers her purpose and finds love once more.
The album’s diverse tempos, tones and moods, not only engaged the audience but also served as a powerful ode to women, encouraging them to prioritise their happiness.
JoyRukanza’s message was clear: “Matter More For Yourself, Sister.” Playing advocate for healthy relationships, she called on women to find the strength to leave behind unfortunate situations, take stock of what truly matters and focus on themselves.
With her unique fusion of pop and classical elements, JoyRukanza delivered a compelling narrative that resonated deeply with her audience.
Notably, Bulawayo Mayor, Councillor David Coltart, was among the audience enjoying the performance.
As the night unfolded, the delightful synergy of instruments and vocals, coupled with JoyRukanza’s heartfelt storytelling, transformed the Zimbabwe Music Academy into a haven of inspiration and empowerment.
The concert, which saw Lady Tshawe directing proceedings, not only celebrated her artistic journey but also honoured the resilience and strength of women everywhere.
With her blend of talent and poignant messaging, JoyRukanza continues to carve out her place in the music world, proving that home is where the heart — and the art — truly flourish. — Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
