JUST IN: Countrywide lockdown blitz nets 10 000

POLICE have arrested close to 10 000 people countrywide within three days for violating national lockdown regulations.

The police arrested 3 459 people on Friday, 3 641 on Saturday and 2 848 on Sunday for violating lockdown regulations.

Government imposed a strict Level Four lockdown at the beginning of the year to contain Covid-19 cases that were on the increase and leading to many deaths.

Under Level Four national lockdown non-essential service providers are expected to close shop while the public are supposed to stay at home.

In a statement on Monday morning, the police said more than 400 000 people have been arrested since the start of the national lockdown last year at the end of March.

“Since the onset of the national lockdown on 30 March 2020, a cumulative total of 403 544 people have been arrested for violating national lockdown measures.  Most of those arrested were in violation of movement restrictions. Members of the public are advised to comply with the measures put in place by the Government to reduce the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic,” read the statement.
