ONE person died and five people sustained serious injuries when a Toyota Harrier they were travelling in collided with a truck at the intersection of Masiyephambili and Khami roads near Nkulumane Complex on Tuesday morning.

The Harrier which was crossing the robots while heading to town had five passengers; two men, two women and a male driver while the truck had only the driver.

An unidentified woman who was in the Toyota Harrier died on the spot.

The truck driver and three passengers were rushed to hospital.

When a Chronicle news crew arrived at the scene just before 9AM, the body of the accident victim was still at the scene.

The injured had already been taken to the hospital while the driver was at the scene.

A vendor at the scene said one of the vehicles was speeding.

“The truck driver came speeding and he could not stop at the red robot so he collided with the Harrier which was crossing the robots,” said the vendor.

Residents at the scene said accidents regularly happen at the intersection.

A resident who preferred anonymity said there is need for the construction of humps just before the robots to avoid accidents.

“This place needs humps just before robots so that the rate of accidents happening here can be reduced. Last week there was another accident here and my relatives died on the spot,” he said.

A motorist agreed.

“There is need for the construction of humps before robots so that motorists would reduce speed when travelling and that is the best way to avoid and reduce accidents happening here,” said a motorist

Police officers attended the scene.

The truck was towed away before the news crew had arrived at scene while the Toyota harrier was taken away after 9AM.
