THE Kwekwe Sports, Arts and Culture Festival which had taken a sabbatical mainly due to the Covid-19 outbreak, makes a return this weekend.

A brainchild of Kwekwe City Council, the 27th edition of the festival will run from Friday 27 October to Sunday 29 October under the theme ‘A clean sweep: lets win the battle against drug and substance abuse with sports , arts and culture.’

Various sports, arts and culture activities ranging from soccer, netball, volleyball, snooker, modelling, traditional dance, tennis, 21 kilometer marathon, musical gala, among other activities, will be spread across the three days.

Organizers are confident that the event will go a long way in spreading the anti-drug message among the youths which has since been declared a disaster.

“As our theme says, the festival is not only for talent identification and promoting grassroots talent but also to curb social ills. In line with the theme, we are using the festival to try and address drug and substance abuse among youths. We are going to have a number of activities lined up towards addressing drug and substance abuse,” said Mr Edson Chiyangwa, Kwekwe City Director of Housing.

Various partners will also be in place offering various services like HIV testing, and counselling.

Although Mbizo Sports Centre, which has a stadium and a sports arena, will be the main venue for the function, some activities will be spread across the city’s other venues.

Mr Chiyangwa said although turnout was still low, it is expected to increase as days draw to a close.

“Judging from previous experience, participants have a tendency of registering at the last minute. But we continue encouraging participants to come and participate in this event.” he said.

Registration fees range from US$10 to US$20 depending on discipline and age group.

Marathon, one of the main attractions, will be held on Sunday morning.
