BULAWAYO-based women’s basketball side, Lakers, left Bulawayo for Mozambique yesterday to participate in the African Club Championships to be held in Maputo from today to next Friday.

Lakers qualified for the Africa Club qualifiers after they were runners-up behind Angola’s Interclube in the just ended Zone Six Basketball Club Championships at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF).

Lakers coach, Sikhumbuzo Ndlovu, said despite a few challenges, the club is geared up to represent Zimbabwe.

“Financially, things have been tough but we are so glad that we have managed to pull through and prepare for the tournament. We are now left with a few logistics and I can confirm that we will be leaving today (yesterday) in a few hours from now,” said Ndlovu.

The team left with 15 players and the coach said he had to select a number of youngsters in order to prepare them for bigger stage events.

“All our players are fit with no recorded injuries. Tomorrow (today) when we’ve settled in Maputo, we will register 12 players who will participate throughout the tournament and I’m optimistic that my players will draw the motivation from the journey we have taken from 2009 to this day.

“I took a few youngsters to groom them. Our objective is to maintain the status of this club and even make it a bigger brand,” said Ndlovu. — @DecoDecent2.
