PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has mourned the death of two MDC-Alliance activists killed when the vehicle they were travelling in collided head-on with another vehicle on the outskirts of Kwekwe city on Monday night.

Glenview MP, Vimbai Tsvangirai-Java, daughter to the late MDC-T president Mr Morgan Tsvangirai escaped with injuries and is in hospital.

The MDC-Alliance members who had attended the party’s Bulawayo provincial campaign caucus, were on their way to Harare when they were involved in the accident.

“Very sorry to hear of the tragic car crash that claimed the lives of two committed MDC activists and injured Vimbai Tsvangirai.”

“My thoughts are with the loved ones of the deceased, and I join the Tsvangirai family and the nation as a whole in praying for Vimbai’s speedy recovery,” said President Mnangagwa on his social networking Twitter page.

MDC national spokesman, Mr Jacob Mafume, yesterday confirmed the death of the two party members saying the party had lost devoted members.

He, however, said details of the accident were still sketchy although indications were that there had been an overtaking error on the part of a vehicle that was driving towards Kwekwe which collided with the MDC officials’ vehicle.

“The MDC expresses its heartfelt condolences to the Rukanda and Mhundwa families in particular and the MDC family in general for the sad loss of Paul Rukanda and Tafadzwa Mhundwa in a tragic accident last night in Kwekwe” said Mr Mafume.

Rukanda was the Glenview South District Organising Secretary while Mhundwa was the Ward 7 Mt Pleasant vice chairperson.

“Glen View South legislator, Hon Vimbai Tsvangirai-Java and Mrs Muringani, the Harare West ward 16 Women’s Assembly Chairperson, were injured in the same accident. Mhundwa is the brother to the late Susan Tsvangirai. Rukanda was Hon Tsvangirai-Java’s campaign manager and they were on their way to Harare after attending the Bulawayo provincial campaign caucus. Mrs Tsvangirai-Java is campaigning for the post of Women’s Assembly Secretary,” said Mr Mafume.

He said Mrs Tsvangirai-Java is admitted at a Harare Hospital while Mrs Muringani has since been discharged.
