Macheso proves class is permanent

Alick Macheso’s handlers and partners successfully launched his 13th album titled Kupa Kuturika at Alexandra Sports Club in Harare on Friday. Departing from their usual venue, the Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex, this gamble paid off as fans turned out in large numbers.
Despite concerns about the suitability of Alexandra Sports Club for a sungura gig, the event was a resounding success. Some fans though were disappointed that Macheso only played one new song, Zvinoda Hama, but others were satisfied with his flawless performance.
Age may be catching up with him, but Macheso still has the mojo and has proven that class is permanent. The musician who has been a dominant force in the music industry for 26 years since leaving Nicholas Zakaria’s Khiama Boys, showcased his enduring talent. As anticipated, his 13th album represents positive transformation and growth and he demonstrated that he still has a lot to offer.
Filling the spacious venue to capacity, Macheso silenced his doubters.
Unlike in 2022, when thousands were turned away at the Tinosvitswa Nashe album launch at Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex, Alexandra Sports Club proved to be the perfect venue for this event. Though he may not be the same Macheso of 1998 who released Magariro, his lasting impact and creativity remain undeniable.
While some social media users criticised him for only playing one new song, his loyal fans remain supportive. They believe that Macheso has nothing left to prove and, like fine wine, he improves with age.
The event featured a star-studded line-up of youthful creatives who look up to Macheso. Macheso’s sons, Esau and Tatenda, demonstrated that the Orchestra Mberikwazvo brand is in safe hands. The Cheso Boys’ co-directors complemented each other on and off stage, having been groomed by their father for years. Songbird, Feli Nandi stole the show with her sing-along tracks Mubayeyi, Ndoona Iwe and Muti Watemwa. Rap sensation Saintfloew from Chitungwiza also impressed with his performance, supported by Shabach The Band.
DJ Fantan energised the crowd with a diverse playlist from Chimurenga, Zimdancehall and reggae.
Like top athlete Cristiano Ronaldo, Macheso continues to break records. His tough upbringing has made him stronger and he showcased his generosity by involving youthful musicians in his album launch. Since the death of Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi in January 2019, Macheso has taken on the role of a father figure in the showbiz world.
“We don’t have a problem sharing or collaborating with youngsters, as was the case today. I might be way older than most of these guys who supported me today, but I also learn from them. I will always make myself available if they need my expertise,” Macheso said.
The event was attended by notable figures, including Minister of Youth Empowerment and Vocational Training, Tino Machakaire, who praised Macheso for his generosity. Macheso’s 13th album launch was a resounding success, and his fans are the best judges to review the new songs. The album is now available on digital platforms.
