ZIMBABWE rugby international Tapiwa Mafura’s special Currie Cup moment was made more spectacular as his Fidelity ADT Lions side brushed aside NovaVit Griffons in a match that was played at the Emirates Airline Park in Johannesburg, South Africa on Friday.

The Sables fullback was making his 50th Currie Cup appearance on Friday and it turned out to be a memorable outing as they mauled the Griffons 62-5.

Mafura and the table topping Lions are now set to face the defending champions Toyota Cheetahs in the semi-finals on Saturday at the Emirates Airline Park.

The other semi-final encounter is between Vodacom Bulls and Hollywoodbets Sharks (home to Sables loose forward, Tino Mavesere).

The winners will then battle it out for the coveted title on September 21 at the home ground of the highest-placed semi-final winner.

The Zimbabwean ace has made a name for himself as one of the most successful players in South Africa’s domestic scene.

Mafura is a three-time Currie Cup winner, twice with the Cheetahs and once with the Airlink Pumas and will be hoping to make it four on his maiden season with the Lions

In the game against the Griffons, Zimbabwe born lock, Darrien-Lane Landsberg was named Champion of the Match after a stellar performance.
