POLICE in Bulawayo have arrested a Mahatshula man for attacking a fellow imbiber during a dispute over football which erupted while the pair was drinking beer at Sompisi Beer Garden.

The victim was rushed to United Bulawayo Hospitals after he sustained a deep cut on his forehead following the attack.

Talent Moyo was arrested four days later and is being charged with attempted murder.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident on Thursday and urged members of the public to refrain from resorting to violence whenever they have disagreements.

“The complainant and the accused person were drinking beer at Sompisi shops, Mahatshula, Bulawayo, whilst discussing soccer matters last week on Thursday. The complainant and the accused then had a misunderstanding, which resulted in the accused picking up a brick and striking the complainant once on the left side of the forehead,” said Insp Ncube.

He said the complainant reported the matter at ZRP Queens Park and police attended the scene, but failed to locate Moyo.

A small blood-stained face brick used by the accused to strike the complainant was recovered near a braai stand at Sompisi Bottle Store.

“The complainant sustained a deep cut on the left side of his forehead and was referred to United Bulawayo Hospitals for medical attention. Police received information on the whereabouts of the accused person four days later and they proceeded to Sompisi Business Centre to carry out surveillance. The accused person was spotted and arrested,” he added.

Insp Ncube urged members of the public not to take the law into their own hands, but try to find an amicable way to solve their problems.

“The police would like to urge members of the community to seek redress from other people than to resort to violence.” – @thamamoe
