A TEACHER from Bulawayo yesterday demanded custody of his son in a bid to escape paying child support.

Charungwa Zvenyika was dragged to the maintenance court by his son’s uncle Tapireyi Mazadza.

Mazadza pleaded with Magistrate Sithembiso Ncube to grant him $140 for the upkeep of his nephew.

“My nephew lost his mother when he was only seven months old. He is now 15-years-old and his father hasn’t contributed any money. I beg this court to make the father pay maintenance for the upkeep of his son,” he said.

The court heard from Zvenyika that he would rather be granted custody of his son.

“I love my son and I beg this court to give me custody. I’m a teacher and have five other children. My salary is $442,”he said.

Magistrate Ncube told Zvenyika to seek custody at another court.

“Why has it taken you so long to seek custody of your child? You will have to make an offer towards the upkeep of your son,” she said.

Zvenyika offered $40 but Magistrate Ncube ruled that Zvenyika should pay $50 towards the upkeep of his child.
