THIS weekend, gin enthusiasts will converge at Sandy Spruit Dam for the Matobo Gin Festival, organised by Comrades Beverages. Now in its third year since launching in 2021, the festival has become a highlight on Matabeleland’s culinary calendar, offering a vibrant celebration of African craft gin, local cuisine and live music.
Set against the stunning backdrop of Matobo National Park, a Unesco World Heritage site renowned for its breath-taking landscapes and rich cultural history, the festival promises an unforgettable experience. Attendees will enjoy a diverse selection of African spirits paired with delicious food, accompanied by live performances from talented local artists.
Bhekimpilo Ncube, one of the festival’s organisers, shared his excitement: “Everything is falling into place. All of the gin varieties and service providers are ready.”
He said gin lovers will have the opportunity to sample unique brands, including Comrades Beverages’ own Matobo African Gin, Eswatini’s Shelela Gin, Obonato Distillery’s Mzansi Marula Gin and Malawi Gin, among others. For those seeking non-alcoholic options, Nyanga Craft ciders and beverages will also be available.
In a strategic effort to boost tourism, the festival is aligned with the ongoing Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo taking place in Bulawayo.
“We wanted to highlight the beauty and significance of Matobo. This is about tourism and showcasing what our region has to offer,” Ncube explained.
Music will be at the heart of the festival, thanks to a partnership with House in the CBD. The line-up will feature local DJs and performers, including DJ Sida, Djembe Monks, Sylent Nqoe, Deeper Mr Stripes, Mdusevan and Feel G, ensuring a pulsating atmosphere throughout the event.
A new feature this year is the introduction of a festival passport, giving campers access to the campsite and serving as a guide to the preferences of gin enthusiasts during the event. Some of the best craft gin makers from across Africa and beyond will be in attendance, making this year’s edition even more special.
As the Matobo Gin Festival continues to grow, its impact on local tourism is becoming increasingly apparent. By celebrating local craft spirits and the natural beauty of the Matobo area, the festival not only draws visitors but also fosters a sense of community and pride in Zimbabwe’s cultural heritage. — Follow on @MbuleloMpofu.
