FRINGE Warriors’ right-back McClive Phiri’s camp has been caught by surprise that he has been transfer listed by newly promoted DStv Premier Soccer League side Sekhukhune United.

Phiri, a regular in Sekhukhune’s campaign for promotion to the South African Premiership with a number of goals, has reportedly been told to look for another team as the club continues to beef up its squad.

The former Highlanders’ defender joined Sekhukhune at the beginning of the 2020/21 season after the folding of Wits University, has been discarded alongside countryman and former FC Platinum winger Wisdom Mutasa.

Phiri’s business manager Dalu Bhebhe said they are yet to get communication regarding his client being offloaded.

“I’ve just read in the media that McClive has been offloaded and I can’t comment because nothing formal has been said to us,” said Bhebhe.

Sekhukhune have beefed up their squad with the acquisition of former Warriors’ captain Willard Katsande, who reportedly penned a two-year deal after being dumped by Kaizer Chiefs last month.

Katsande spent a decade at Chiefs and won a number of accolades since joining them from Ajax Cape Town, but was deemed excess to requirements by Amakhosi, as they engage in a re-building exercise after expiry of their two-window transfer ban imposed by Fifa.

Online publication FARpost reported that Katsande was also on the wish list of Durban club AmaZulu, who will be debuting in the Caf Champions League this season, Moroka Swallows and Stellenbosch.

He opted for Sekhukhune, who reportedly made him a generous offer.

At Sekhukhune, Katsande links up with fellow countrymen, eccentric goalkeeper and captain Tapuwa Kapini, and new signings, winger Talent Chawapiwa, who was offloaded by AmaZulu, and Jimmy Dzingai.

Phiri will not be the only Zimbabwean player club hunting, as Danny Phiri’s contract wasn’t renewed by Golden Arrows. Ovidy Karuru, goalkeeper Edmore Sibanda and former Bosso striker Cleopas Dube, who left Uthongathi FC in the First division, are also searching for new homes. — @ZililoR
