THE Meteorological Department (MSD) in Zimbabwe has issued a warning ahead of heavy rainfall expected to fall the countrywide from November 11 to November 14.
The alert comes as most provinces have already begun experiencing significant weather changes.
According to a statement and audio from the MSD, on November 11, light showers and thunderstorms were reported across Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Manicaland, and the Midlands provinces. Notably, Bulawayo recorded 8mm of rainfall, while other regions received below 1mm. However, afternoon weather patterns saw isolated heavy showers as a cloud band moved across the country.
Crucially, from Tuesday to Wednesday, heavy rain is anticipated in Manicaland and Masvingo, with rainfall amounts expected to exceed 50mm within a 21-hour period.
The forecast for Tuesday, November 12, 2024, indicates:
– Morning: Partly cloudy and mild conditions across the country.
– Afternoon: Hot and mostly cloudy weather with widespread thunderstorms expected.
– Overnight: Warm conditions under clear skies.
In light of the impending weather, the MSD has urged citizens to take necessary precautions. They recommend securing rooftops, particularly in schools, as the storms may bring strong winds and hail. Zimbabweans are also advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms to ensure their safety. Additionally, they have been warned against crossing flooded rivers or sheltering under trees from the rain, as it increases the chances of being struck by lightning.
