THE announcement of the Warriors squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Benin and Nigeria has invited mixed reactions, with the return of veteran striker Knowledge Musona emerging as the most contentious issue.

Musona’s unexpected decision to come out of retirement, having stepped away from international football in 2022, has dominated discussions.

The 35-year-old’s return is a significant boost for the Warriors, with coach Michael Nees having long expressed his desire to see Musona back in the fold. The prolific forward, who has netted 24 goals in 49 appearances for Zimbabwe, is expected to bring his vast experience to count in what will be crucial fixtures for the team.

The Warriors will next be in action in a must-win clash against Benin in Durban on March 20.
They will then face a formidable Nigerian side in Uyo five days later.
With Musona’s leadership and experience, there is hope that Zimbabwe can build momentum, particularly in the encounter against Benin.

As the squad was unveiled, reactions from Warriors supporters varied.
Trust Jim, a member of the Zimbabwe National Soccer Supporters Association (ZNSSA), expressed reservations about Musona’s inclusion. While acknowledging the striker’s past contributions to the team, Jim said there is a need to give younger players a chance.

“I think we have youngsters who can do the job for us. Musona has done a lot for the Warriors but it’s time to focus on the future.”

On the other hand, Blessing Marangwanda, secretary-general of the Dynamos Bulawayo Chapter, was more enthusiastic.
“I am over the moon with the squad selection,” he said, highlighting coach Nees’ decision to maintain continuity by retaining most of the players from the Afcon qualifiers.”

Marangwanda also praised Musona’s return, calling it a “massive boost” to the team’s attacking options.
“His experience and leadership will be invaluable upfront,” he said.
While he was hopeful for a call-up for players like Bill Antonio and Elvis Chipezeze, Marangwanda remained optimistic about the team’s prospects. “The Warriors are ready to roar! Go Zimbabwe!” he said.

Taso Mutongoza, another supporter, shared a similar sentiment.
“The squad for the Benin match is a Dream Team!” he enthused.

The coach has cleverly blended continuity with experience. Musona’s return will undoubtedly sharpen our attack, and we are all excited to see the Warriors take to the field.”

Shepherd Ncube, reflecting a more balanced viewpoint, agreed that Musona’s inclusion was a positive move.
“His decision to retire early was a surprise but now that he’s back, his experience is what the team needs. We may need to integrate locally-based players into the squad, but with the league just starting, now is not the time to experiment.”

However, Vincent Moyo, who took a more critical view, argued that while experience was necessary, the team needed a balanced approach.

“We cannot ignore the future of Zimbabwean football. There needs to be a mix of youth and experience to ensure that we build a strong squad for the years ahead.”

Alois Takawira also shared his thoughts on the squad selection.
“We respect our coach’s decision, and we’re pleased he retained the majority of players from previous selections, including our former captain, Knowledge Musona,” Takawira said.

“Our main concern is the absence of Teenage Hadebe, but we trust that those selected will rise to the occasion. We had hoped to see Bill Antonio in the squad, but perhaps due to his recent injury, he was left out. Nonetheless, we remain hopeful that he will be called up next time. All the best to our coach, the team, and the nation at large.”

Hadebe opted out of the team to attend to family business. He is due for an interview over his bid for a US green card.
As the Warriors prepare for their first World Cup qualifier against Benin at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, the Zifa has confirmed ticket prices for the match, with the cheapest seat priced at R50.
