Mlilo wins Bulawayo Cross Country Championships Watson Madanyika

DENFORD Mlilo won the Bulawayo Cross Country Championships held on Saturday.

The race started at Nketa Drive Park in Mpopoma, going through Matshobana and back to the park.

Mlilo finished the 10km race in 37 minutes 57.59 seconds followed by Thabo Mapfumo, who crossed the line in 38.05.07, while Lenias Mcelelwa was third in 43.48.80 Annie Chirisa won the senior women’s 10km race in 47.47.78.

Bulawayo Athletics Association (Bab) president Watson Madanyika said following the success of Saturday’s cross-country event, they expect runners to improve their times in the last cross-country competition on February 12 at the same venue to select a provincial team for the nationals.

“We are confident that we will assemble a strong team that will represent us during inter-provincials in Kadoma on 19 February 2022.

We are now focusing on the Bab track and field competition to be held on 5 February at White City stadium,” said Madanyika.

He said host the national track and field championships at White City Stadium where athletes will compete in the 100m, 200m,400m, 1500m, 3000m, 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 4×100m, triple jump, long jump, high jump, short put, discus, hammer and javelin.

Programmes have also been lined up for the 2018 season that are meant to develop athletics in the city and partners have been secured for the different competitions, Madanyika said. — @innocentskizoe
