THE Mangwe Farmers Association plans to set up feedlots in all wards in the district by year-end, the association’s secretary Mr Godfrey Ndlovu, has said. The association embarked on the feedlot project in 2012 when they realised that people were losing a lot of cattle due to the drought and many were selling their livestock for next to nothing because of their poor health.
“There are three more feedlots to be opened in Mambale, Ngwizi and Maninji in addition to the other five which are already functioning,” said Mr Ndlovu in an interview.

He said work on the feedlots would start soon as the required materials were already on site.
The chairman of the association, Mr Adam Bango-Dube, said villagers had accepted the concept of feedlots.

“This project is being accepted well and the villagers are happy about it. By taking their livestock to the feedlots they are guaranteed of the good health of their livestock which will fetch them more money at auctions.

“The villagers are responding very well, actually they are the ones who are pushing us to open more feedlots.”
He said by having feedlots in each ward, many villagers would benefit from the project which was also expected to boost the national herd.
Mangwe lies in an area where rainfall is generally low and suitable for livestock production.
