A Bulawayo-produced action thriller Veza: The Unfolding has once again raised the Zimbabwean flag high after receiving four nominations at the Zambian Sotambe International Film Festival Awards.
The awards which are in their ninth edition will be held during the festival which runs from September 17 to 24. Film screenings will take place between September 17 and September 23, with the awards ceremony taking place on September 24.

In March this year, the film, directed by Dumi Manyathela, was nominated for Best Movie in Southern Africa at the African Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA).

At the Zambian awards, the film has been nominated for Best Southern African Film with director Manyathela nominated in the Best Director’s category, lead actor Calvin Madula nominated in the Best Actor category, and cinematographer Rodney Mabaleka nominated for Best Cinematography.

Sotambe, which means “come and watch”, was founded in 2014 in Zambia’s Copperbelt province to educate and raise awareness about social concerns through film and the arts, while also giving a forum for filmmakers to display their ideas.

From the standpoint of the film’s several international penetrations, this could be a sign that Veza is of top-notch quality.

Speaking to Chronicle Showbiz, Manyathela said they made the best out of the film with the intention of penetrating international borders.

“When we made the film, our intention was not to just premiere, but to make the best so that we could break national boundaries and penetrate international boundaries. To be honest, I expected fireworks from the indie film, but not dynamite.

“As a team, we’re very humbled and truly honoured for the recognition because this is boosting our confidence to do better and produce more relatable content,” Manyathela said.

“The bar has been set with this product and that has not only put me but the rest of the creatives out of their comfort zones. I’m challenged to do better and set the standard and production value of future projects even higher.

“The only competition I have is the last project. Now I have to beat that competition and I’ve learned not to rush the process, but take my time,” Manyathela said.
