NOMINATIONS for the Zifa elections to select a new president, vice-president and four board members slated for December 5 opened on Friday and are set to close on November 5.

There will only be elections for four board members as two others will automatically be filled by the Premier Soccer League and Zimbabwe Women’s Football.

The Zifa electoral committee headed by Justice Sello Nare, the former judge president of the Labour Court, met in Harare on Friday to discuss the election roadmap following the dissolution of the Zifa board by the association’s councillors at the extraordinary meeting of October 3 at Prince Edward High School.

Other members of the electoral committee are Tendai Madzorera, former Zifa vice-president, sports administrator Elizabeth Banda, former prosecutor Musekiwa Mbanje, legal practitioner Tichawana Nyahuma, a member of the Zifa High Performance Technical Committee Charles Sibanda and lawyer Tinofara Kudakwashe Hove.

The committee’s secretary Jonathan Mashingaidze, Cornelius Bganya, Passious Masunda and Ralph Maganga are ex-officio members by virtue of their placement in football.

Mashingaidze is the Zifa chief executive officer, Bganya and Masunda are honorary Zifa members while Maganga is the association’s lawyer.

Justice Nare told the association’s website that his committee would deliver a faultless election.

“We’re ready for the task and we’re confident we’ll produce a credible, free and fair election,” said Justice Nare.

The electoral committee was established in terms of the Zifa electoral code’s article 3.1 and is an independent body charged with overseeing the electoral processes in respect of the nominations, vetting of candidates, production of final list of candidates, production of electoral material, such as nomination forms, ballot papers and the holding of the elections.

While no one has publicly declared their intention to run for office, some names have been thrown around as possible candidates to replace Cuthbert Dube as Zifa president.

Former FC Platinum boss Nathan Shoko, Caps United president Farai Jere and radio personality Charles Mabika’s names have been mentioned.

One needs to possess at least five years of football leadership experience to contest for the Zifa presidency.

Some councillors are reportedly angling former vice-president Omega Sibanda to succeed his former supremo.

Former Highlanders’ chairman Themba Ndlela has reportedly been approached to run for one of the board members’ position.
