THE powerful voices of choral musicians filled Hall One at the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Centre in Bulawayo on Saturday evening as The Original Messiah Choir Ministries celebrated an incredible 50 years of singing choral music.
The evening was made even more special with the presence of supporting groups Sounds of Comfort and 12 Gates Zambia, both boasting decades of excellence in their craft.
Choral music lovers from various Christian denominations came together for a night filled with heavenly melodies and masterful musical arrangements. The audience was treated to the artistry of human voices in their purest form, without the accompaniment of instruments, proving once again why choral music is so deeply cherished.
The enthusiastic turnout, with attendees happily parting with US$5 for entrance, underscored the hunger for such events.
The star of the evening was Lamech Ndimande, The Original Messiah Choir Ministries’ composer and conductor, who showcased his expertise with spellbinding renditions of classics like Moses Khiphi Mbatata, Ingumangaliso, and Achauya.
The evening’s MC, Mduduzi “MK” Mkandla, kept the programme flowing seamlessly, adding a professional touch to the proceedings.
The celebration also honoured key figures in the choir’s history, with founder Titus Tshuma and long-serving members receiving long-service certificates. Special recognition was given to the late national hero Colonel Tshinga Dube, Bulawayo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Judith Ncube, Delma Lupepe, and Alvord Mabhena for their unwavering support of the choir’s mission.
A highlight of the night was a collaborative performance of the timeless Hallelujah Chorus by The Original Messiah Choir Ministries and their Zambian counterparts, 12 Gates Zambia. The intricate arrangement and soaring harmonies left the audience spellbound, delivering a truly heavenly experience.
Reflecting on the event, Ndimande expressed joy at the overwhelming support.
“We had people coming from as far as Harare and other towns and cities. The business community also supported us. It was a moment to share our 50-year journey with the public,” he said.
He said the choir’s legacy remains strong, with a new generation of talented young members ensuring the group’s future.
“Our mission of preaching the gospel through pure, melodious voices, undiluted by instruments, will continue unabated,” he added.
The evening was not just a celebration of 50 years of music but also a reaffirmation of the timeless power of choral music to inspire and uplift.
