Premier League round-up: Bournemouth stun Manchester City, first win for Southampton and Nottingham Forest triumph

Liverpool are the new Premier League leaders after Bournemouth recorded a historic triumph over Manchester City. Southampton secured their first league win of the season thanks to Adam Armstrong but a late equaliser from Jordan Ayew prevented Ipswich Town from doing the same. And Nottingham Forest trounced struggling West Ham as Chris Wood struck again, moving the Midlanders into the top three.

Goals from Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson gave Bournemouth a first win over Manchester City as The Cherries dealt a blow to Pep Guardiola’s title hopes.
Bournemouth’s record against Man City read two draws and 19 defeats ahead of this meeting, but Andoni Iraola helped dispel the weight of history and send Cherries supporters into raptures with a deserved victory over the reigning champions.
After a superb Ederson double save in the opening minutes, Milos Kerkez ensured home pressure would not go to waste by turning the tables on Phil Foden – beating him on the left wing and pulling it back from the byline to the edge of the six-yard box.

Semenyo beat Josko Gvardiol to the ball but did not pull the trigger immediately, instead spinning away from the Croatian before firing past Ederson.
As Kevin De Bruyne watched from the bench, Guardiola’s hole deepened in the second half when Kerkez sent a bouncing cross into the penalty area from deep and Evanilson met it at full stretch, directing the ball past Ederson who found himself in no-man’s land.
Marcus Tavernier hit the post soon after and Adam Smith blazed the rebound over the bar, a moment both players regretted when Gvardiol headed through the hands of Mark Travers entering the final 10 minutes.

Erling Haaland and Foden both had chances to snatch a point but with Liverpool coming from behind to earn three points against Brighton, the Premier League has new leaders.
Guardiola’s only consolation will be Arsenal’s defeat at Newcastle, while Bournemouth move into the top half of the table.

HEADY DAYS FOR WOOD AND FOREST

Nottingham Forest’s extraordinary league start continues as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side moved up to third in the table thanks to a commanding victory over West Ham kick-started by Wood, who also goes onto the podium in the Premier League Golden Boot race.
Morgan Gibbs-White fed Alex Moreno who flashed past Konstantinos Mavropanos and crossed to Wood who could not miss his header inside the six-yard box on 27 minutes.

West Ham’s task got harder when Edson Alvarez’s cynical tackle on Anthony Elanga earned him a second yellow card just before half-time, and Julen Lopetegui’s team talk had little effect as Forest continued their onslaught after the break

Callum Hudson-Odoi killed the game when Forest got inventive from a free-kick that was effectively a short corner on the edge of the penalty area, the winger receiving a short pass before lifting a cross into a crowded danger zone that somehow missed everyone including Lukasz Fabianski between the sticks.
Ola Aina’s rocket from distance heaped further distress on the sorry Hammers, who stay 14th and looking over their shoulders at the relegation zone.

SOUTHAMPTON OFF THE MARK

Southampton tasted victory in the Premier League for the first time under Russell Martin, ending a 20-month wait for three points in the top flight thanks to a 1-0 win over Everton.
Yukinari Sugawara disguised his assist brilliantly as Everton’s centre-backs focused on Cameron Archer’s run to the back post, allowing Adam Armstrong to drift into the vacated space around the penalty spot, and he left Jordan Pickford grasping at thin air with an assured first-time finish.
Beto thought he had scored a second late equaliser in two games when he latched onto a through ball and beat Aaron Ramsdale one-on-one, but it was disallowed after a lengthy VAR check and Martin’s men held on at St Mary’s.
The win lifts Southampton off the foot of the Premier League and above Wolves, who host Crystal Palace in Saturday’s evening kick-off.

AYEW ENSURES IPSWICH’S WAIT CONTINUES

As reported by the BBC, Ipswich had led for just 47 minutes and nine seconds in the entire Premier League season before this game – the shortest time of any team – but Leif Davis’ laser looked set to secure a first victory back in the Premier League at home to Leicester.
Sam Morsy pumped a long ball into the box that left-back Davis met on the volley from a tight angle and he blazed his shot past Mads Hermansen before the Dane had a chance to react.

Kalvin Phillips could have seen red for his first challenge but the sixth sending-off of his career came moments after The Tractor Boys saw penalty shouts waved away when Conor Chaplin hit the deck in the box after tussling with Abdul Fatawu.
Play continued and a late challenge earned Phillips a second yellow card that came back to haunt Ipswich when Jordan Ayew played a neat one-two with Jamie Vardy and produced a fine finish past the charging Arijanet Muric.
The Foxes had the better of the dying embers of injury time but could not find a winner, meaning they remain five points clear of the relegation zone. Eurosport
