ACTING Chief Mabhikwa of Lupane has urged citizens in Matabeleland North to prioritise national sovereignty and patriotism, especially with the upcoming 44th SADC Summit set to take place in Harare at the weekend.

He addressed concerns about some individuals attempting to denounce the country and called for unity and support.

Giving a vote of thanks at the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day celebrations at Somhlolo Stadium in Lupane yesterday, Acting Chief Mabhikwa, also known as Mr John Khumalo, encouraged young people to join Zimbabwe’s security services, including the army, police and prison services.

“That we are here today is a result of sacrifices we made as freedom fighters and those that did not return home. Today we celebrate our heroes and heroines led by our Head of State and I want to appeal on behalf of other chiefs in Matabeleland North, to our young people in Matabeleland North to join the Zimbabwe National Army, police and prison service,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of community pride in having local youths serve in these roles and countered fears about joining the military by highlighting the dedication and survival of existing soldiers.

“I know, you have been told that if you join the army you will die, why are these soldiers still alive? We want to be proud seeing you in the army and police,” he said.

The acting chief also advised citizens to heed the guidance of traditional leaders and remain peaceful during the Sadc Summit.

“As traditional leaders, we have 34 chiefs in the Provincial Assembly in Matabeleland North. When we have challenges there is a way of attending to issues. Our country will be hosting the SADC Summit, I appeal to our people not to be misled by some people to do things that are not good,” said Acting Chief Mabhikwa.

He re-assured the community that the Second Republic has made strides in addressing perceived marginalisation and providing equal job opportunities, reinforcing a commitment to inclusivity.

“We have our leader who guides us in solving issues. I gave you an example of us traditional leaders that we meet as a provincial assembly to attend to issues. These Sadc countries will be meeting to iron out issues in Southern Africa, so I appeal to you Matabeleland North to be guided by our leaders and traditional leaders and stay away from violence during this time,” said Acting Chief Mabhikwa.
