ONE of Victoria Falls’ renowned businessmen, Mr Misheck Mpofu who operated the city’s Comesa Market popularly known as Emaplankeni has died following a long struggle with diabetes and hypertension.

He was 66 and was buried on Thursday at Chinotimba Cemetery.

Mr Mpofu, who had been in and out of hospital for some years after suffering a stroke a few years ago, died last Sunday, his son Mr Sunboy Mbongeni Mpofu confirmed.

“He had been battling with diabetes and hypertension for some years now and had been in and out of hospital after also suffering a stroke,” said Mr Mpofu.

He described his father as a hardworking man who left his family a legacy of how to manage a business.

“He was a family man who also loved his community. It is sad that we have lost a father and a public figure who was for community development,” said Mr Mpofu.

Mr Mpofu became a household name after he constructed the Comesa market, one of the legacy projects in Victoria Falls.

The Comesa Market is the biggest informal traders’ market in Victoria Falls where vendors dealing in clothes, vegetables and other items operate from. The market also has several shops selling a variety of goods.

Business came to a standstill when a funeral cortege for Mr Mpofu moved around the city centre and Emaplankeni as hundreds of Victoria Falls residents, mostly composed of vendors paid their last respects.

The funeral service was held at Chinotimba Hall.

One of the vendors Ms Odria Zimunya said Mr Mpofu’s death was a blow to informal traders in the city.

Mr Mpofu is survived by wife, Precious and five children.
