FORMER Chicken Inn head coach, Prince Matore, has broken a 16-year jinx after guiding his Zifa Central Region Division One outfit Kwekwe United to the Premier Soccer League for the upcoming season.

Matore and his Kwekwe United charges became the first team from the City of Gold to do duty in the top-flight league since Lancashire Steel in 2009.

They won the league after taking an unassailable 71 points, shrugging off competition from Tongogara, Chapungu and Sheasham.

Tongogara, who were fighting for the promotion ticket, blew their last chance after being held to a 1-1 draw by Sheasham at home over the weekend.

“Congratulations to Coach Prince Matore for guiding Kwekwe United FC into the Premier League. Proud of you,” Chicken Inn FC wrote.

Kwekwe United now join Scottland FC and ZPC Hwange who won the Northern Region Soccer League and Southern Region Soccer League respectively in the big boys’ league.

With three teams having already booked their tickets to the topflight, only one solitary ticket from the Eastern Region is left to fight for.

Two games are left to go in the league with three teams still in contention for the title.

Log leaders, FC Wangu Mazodze once again dropped points last weekend after they were held to a goalless draw by fellow title chasing Tenax FC who are sitting in third place. Only two points separate the two teams with Wangu Mazodze on 65 points while Tenax are on 63.

In second place there is Triangle United also on 63 points but enjoy a superior goal difference.

Wangu Mazodze and Triangle have both played 29 games while Tenax have a game more. Triangle beat Midway 3-1 on their week 30 encounter.

In the Northern Region, businessman Wicknell Chivayo has pledged more financial support for Scottland FC.

“I will gladly go ahead and honour the US$1 million pledge I made to the club as a token in recognition of their relentless dedication and commitment that saw them rise to the top of the Northern Region Soccer League table.

It is quite remarkable how this team, founded from humble beginnings in Mabvuku, has now earned its place among Zimbabwe’s elite clubs in the PSL.

“Scottland FC’s exceptional performance has been beyond my expectations and for that, I am pleased to further commit an additional pledge of US$600 000 to assist their PSL journey.

“I do hope that this small gesture will aid the team’s preparations for the upcoming season by supporting player signings and enhancing their conditions of service.

“I personally believe that with the right resources and motivation, Scottland FC is set to make history as the first PSL champions in their debut season…watch the space,” he posted on his Facebook page.
