The Premier Soccer League was established in 1992 as a top flight football League that is affiliated to the Zimbabwe Football Association.

This year, the League celebrates its 25th anniversary. The celebration of this milestone presents an opportunity to reflect on the growth and achievements of the League.

The inaugural season of the modern day Premier Soccer League had the following teams: Black Aces, Black Mambas, Black Rhinos, Caps United, Chapungu, Darryn T, Dynamos, Eiffel Flats, Highlanders, Mhangura, Tanganda, Shu Shine, Hwange and Zimbabwe Saints.

The first League champions were Black Aces. Tanganda and Shu Shine were relegated in the first year of the PSL. Teams like Black Rhinos, Chapungu, and Hwange have been in and out of the PSL since 1992. The only teams that have never been relegated are Caps United, Dynamos and Highlanders.

A total of 74 clubs have played in the PSL.

The establishment of the Premier Soccer League in 1992 resulted in the improvement of the standard of club football in Zimbabwe. The PSL has brought professionalism to Zimbabwean football as it has managed to run its competitions successfully to the satisfaction of its sponsors, clubs, fans and other stakeholders. The Zimbabwe national team has qualified for the African Nations Championship (Chan) tournament a record four times.

The League has produced and nurtured raw talent among local players and has provided a platform for them to make their mark in Africa, Europe and other continents.

Stars like Zenzo Moyo, Joel Luphahla, Silas Songani, Stewart Murisa, the late Adam Ndlovu, William and Wilfred Mugeyi,  Tendai Ndoro, Willard Katsande, George Mbwando, Quincy Antipas, Kaitano Tembo, Khama Billiat to mention but a few, went on to shine on the international and regional landscape.

In the past years, PSL and its clubs have attracted a number of corporates, local authorities and other institutions to improve the administration and management of the game.

The Castle Lager Premier Soccer League currently enjoys a partnership with Delta Beverages (Pvt) Ltd under their Castle Lager and Chibuku Super Cup brands.
